How to measure mosquito nets? Learn how to correctly measure vertical and horizontal mosquito nets.

Ordering mosquito nets online is really simple and convenient, especially if you decide to buy on Windowo. We have already seen in another article on the Windowo blog how convenient it can be in terms of prices to buy your new mosquito nets online .

Today we will focus on another fundamental thing, which will avoid you having "bad surprises" during the installation: how to take the measurements of mosquito nets correctly.

Do you already know how to take measurements and want to directly see which mosquito net models we sell? Go to the category dedicated to Windowo's custom mosquito nets. The Bettio mosquito nets recommended for this season are:

Let's be clear, taking measurements of mosquito nets is not complicated at all and perhaps it doesn't even deserve a separate guide. But since in case of error there is the risk of throwing money "out the window" (in the true sense of the word!) we think it's right to pay due attention to this aspect that is far too underestimated by those in the sector.

After all, if you have never measured a mosquito net yourself, you cannot already be able to do it (unless you are a DIY genius, in which case we congratulate you!) and, if you already knew these things, repeating them cannot hurt you.

Why do we ask you for the measurements of the mosquito net?

If you decide to buy your new mosquito net online, whether it is for a vertically sliding window or a horizontally sliding balcony, you will have to indicate the measurements (in millimetres) of the base and height of the model you wish to purchase. In fact, the mosquito net you order will be provided to you made to measure and made especially for you, with the specific technical characteristics you have decided (such as the presence or absence of the return spring, the colour, the type of mesh, etc.).

Taking measurements is not a boring or useless moment, but rather it is essential to do it with due attention! The request to know the measurement of the base and height of the mosquito net should not surprise you because, since the world is the world, most of the known things are measured exactly like this!

Just think of the formula for the area of a rectangle ... and mosquito nets are nothing more than large rectangles that are placed on holes in the wall (in jargon, we speak of a wall cavity). They can be small or large rectangles, at floor level (like mosquito nets on French windows that open onto balconies and terraces) or rectangles positioned on holes that are higher than the floor (windows).

2 ways to indicate mosquito net measurements: let's discover the difference between finished and compartment measurements

Now let's move on to the "hottest" part of our guide, that is, how to measure mosquito nets from a practical point of view. Be careful: it's very easy but there is a risk of making a mistake! You don't know how many times we have thrown away a new mosquito net just because of carelessness. Of course, these are extreme cases that only happen in the presence of serious measurement errors, but why order an almost perfect mosquito net when you can order one with the optimal measurements?

When ordering you will be asked to indicate the base and height measurement specifying whether the mosquito net measurement is finished or empty. What is the difference?

  • Finished size (i.e. the exact size of the hole): the mosquito net will be supplied with the same measurements as ordered;
  • Compartment measurement : the mosquito net will be supplied with 2-3 mm less base and height.

We recommend the method of measuring the space. In this way, the manufacturer himself will take away the space he deems most appropriate (better to trust those who are more experienced and see mosquito nets from morning to night).

So, to summarize:

If you choose compartment size (or light) - highly recommended:
Base: indicates the smaller measurement between L1 and L2;
Height: indicates the smaller measurement between A1 and A2.

If you choose finished size:
Base: indicate the compartment measurement as width and subtract approximately 2/3 mm;
Height: indicate the compartment measurement as height and subtract approximately 2/3 mm.

The golden rule for taking the right measurements of the mosquito net

What is the rule of the hour that you should always keep in mind when taking measurements? Here it is, print it in your head: if the mosquito net is too big compared to the hole in the wall where it will be inserted, it will be unusable . The only solution will be to completely redo it, with a consequent waste of money. So when you take measurements you must remember to always provide us with the smallest measurements in case of doubt.

Don't worry if there are small differences: it is normal for the walls not to be perfectly aligned, which is why measurements are taken in two places. If the walls are irregular (out of square) up to 6-7 mm there will be no problems during the installation phase.

If the differences between L1 and L2 or between A1 and A2 are greater than 6-7 mm, we recommend that you purchase a mosquito net equipped with telescopic headphones and report this irregularity to us when ordering by writing it in the customer notes.

Telescopic headphones: a big advantage in case of measurement errors

The aforementioned telescopic headphones are used to avoid problems of out-of-squareness of the installation spaces, and therefore to obtain a perfect finish even in the case of slightly crooked walls. Having or not having telescopic headphones can really make the difference.

Some mosquito net models have them already integrated as standard, such as the Rosy mosquito net by Bettio, others can have them if paid separately as optional, other mosquito nets cannot even mount them. In this last case, given the absence of headphones for the box, it is very important to take the measurement of the base very precisely. This will avoid any millimeters of empty spaces that would occur between the box and the compartment.

In case you have mistakenly indicated a measurement with too many millimeters less, with the presence of the caps on the boxes you can plug the possible measurement error (for the lateral ones, since the box is vertical, you can compensate for the error in height, while in the vertical ones the box will be horizontal at the top and you will compensate for the error in width). In short, opting for a mosquito net model with caps is a perfect choice for beginners because if you get the measurements wrong you will always have one more chance!

Now let's look at two concrete examples , one for vertical sliding mosquito nets and one for horizontal ones. The best way to understand something is always to see it in action from a practical point of view. Enough chit-chat and let's get to work.

Vertical Mosquito Nets for Windows: An Example of How to Take Measurements

Let's assume we have a window space like the one in the image above and with the measurements indicated.

If we decide to take the measurements of the vertical mosquito net with the space method, we will have that for the base we will take the measurements of the wall in width from the top and bottom (you can also do it in the center if you want to have additional security). The measurement to take into consideration is always the smallest one , in this case 854 millimeters. For the height we will take the measurements in height on the right and left. As already said a little while ago, the measurement to take into consideration is the smallest one. In this case 1548 millimeters. Simple, right?

If we decide to use the finished measurement system, we will have to calculate the base as before, but in addition, remove 2 millimeters (or maximum 3); therefore: 85.4 cm - 0.2 cm = 852 millimeters. For the height calculated previously, we will also have to remove 2 millimeters (or maximum 3); therefore: 154.8 cm - 0.2 cm = 1546 millimeters.

Horizontal mosquito nets for balconies and French windows: an example of how to take measurements

Now let's think of having a space at floor height like the one in the image above and with the measurements that are indicated. The difference compared to the previous example is that here we are talking about a mosquito net for a balcony or a French window.

If we decide to take the measurements of the horizontal sliding mosquito net with the compartment method, we will have that for the base we will take the measurements of the compartment in width from the top and bottom (and also in the center, if we want to be 100% precise). The measurement to take into consideration is always the smallest one, in this case 1354 millimeters. For the height we will take the measurements of the compartment in height on the right and left. The measurement to take into consideration is the smallest one, in this case 2149 millimeters.

If we decide to use the finished measurement system for the same reference space, we will have to calculate the base as before, but in addition, by removing 2 millimeters, we need to eliminate 2 mm (or maximum 3); therefore: 135.4 cm - 0.2 cm = 1352 millimeters. Now let's take the height calculated before, from which we will have to eliminate approximately 2/3 millimeters; therefore: 214.9 cm - 0.2 cm = 2147 millimeters.

Obviously in the case of replacing a mosquito net already mounted we can directly detect the measurements of our old mosquito net. That will be our finished measurement.
