Leroy Merlin: find out all about the shops, site and marketplace for home and garden do-it-yourself .
Leroy Merlin is the name of the famous
French chain of shops specializing in
bricolage, do-it-yourself, construction, gardening, decoration and bathroom furnishings . Furthermore, Leroy Merlin stores were among the first retailers to enter the general home decoration sector.
The name Leroy Merlin comes from the union of the surnames of the two founding spouses - Adolph Leroy and Rose Merlin - whose interesting story we will go to see in this article.
Each Leroy Merlin store offers a
vast selection of products at prices that are often more convenient than usual, with items from its own brands or from other brands.
In short, in a Leroy Merlin store you can find everything for professional do-it-yourselfers or, simply, for those who like to do small repairs or simple handicraft work on their own.
Not just physical products: Leroy Merlin also offers various DIY and training courses, not to mention the large amount of free tutorials available online.
Did you know that Leroy Merlin has also become a marketplace ? In fact, the official website presents a selection of specialized sellers. Are you interested in becoming a Leroy Merlin seller? Then keep reading... because we'll be talking about it in a very detailed way shortly.
The French chain is mainly present in France (obviously!), in the rest of Europe (not only Italy, but also Spain, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, Romania, Poland, Ukraine and Russia) and also in more distant countries such as China, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Ivory Coast and Brazil.
Leroy Merlin is part of the gigantic
Adeo Group , together with Tecnomat (to which we have already dedicated a specific article:
Bricoman becomes Tecnomat ), Auchan and many other famous brands. The Adeo motto is "living in a healthy, safe, responsible, efficient and comfortable environment".

what Leroy Merlin is , what strengths and weaknesses characterize this huge reality, how to get in touch with Leroy Merlin customer service and how selling through their marketplace works.
The values of Leroy Merlin
Growing, improving, building a better future is the key to the Leroy Merlin vision.
People are placed at the center of the company's value system.
The focus is not only on the customer, but also on the employees: a work environment based on respect and enhancement of everyone's qualities and inclinations is promoted.
This is why the Leroy Merlin team is committed to supporting its collaborators in developing their talent, through learning and training.
Leroy Merlin history and evolution
Leroy Merlin
began as a small family business . Nothing to do with the DIY giant it is today.
The Leroy Merlin brand was born in France in Noeux-Les-Mines in 1923, all this thanks to the entrepreneurial strategy of the spouses
Adolph Leroy and Rose Merlin (the latter of Italian origins).
After a 53-year journey, which passes through the introduction of new collaborators and product types more oriented towards bricolage and do-it-yourself, it arrives in Italy, in 1996, with the opening of the first store in Solbiate Arno (VA) .
To date, Leroy Merlin Italia has more than 50 points of sale distributed throughout the country, approximately 8,500 collaborators and a turnover of over 1.5 billion euros.
Worldwide, Leroy Merlin has more than 450 points of sale in 13 countries, employing more than 150,000 collaborators.
Let's take a closer look at this evolutionary path.
From the foundation of Leroy Merlin to the sale to Auchan
As already mentioned, in the now distant 1923 the spouses Adolph Leroy and Rose Merlin founded a shop in Nœux-les-Mines. In reality, the sign is
Au Stock Américain and it is a resale of war remnants from the First World War.
Starting in 1947, three more shops opened and the company already had a staff of around one hundred people.
In 1960 the brand changed its name (which evidently was already too narrow) to become the Leroy Merlin brand we know today. The first point of sale with free home delivery is also inaugurated.
The development continues unabated. Just think that in the second half of the 70s, Leroy Merlin already had a total of 30 stores in France alone.
In 1979 the company had 1400 employees and invoiced the equivalent of 70 million euros. In this same year, the sons of the founder decide to sell the company to Gérard Mulliez, founder of
Auchan .
Internationalization and the GROUP Adeo
Over the years, Leroy Merlin becomes an international model that brings together various independent companies. Various partnerships are undertaken with other brands then incorporated: Bricoman, Bricocenter, Aki, Weldom and Dompro.
In 1989 the first store in Spain was opened, while in 1996 the first stores in Poland and Italy were inaugurated. Then many other stores opened in other countries where the brand is still present today.
Groupe Adeo was born in July 2006 and Leroy Merlin joined it as the first company, together with Bricoman, Auchan, Zodio and Kbane.
The history of Leroy Merlin Italy
1996 is the year of the landing of
Leroy Merlin Italia with the opening of the first store in Solbiate Arno (Varese).
The Italian branch of Leroy Merlin is then created, in partnership with the Rinascente group for the integration of the Bricocenter stores.
In 2006 the group was renamed to Groupe ADEO. In January 2009, Leroy Merlin Italia bought the 31 Castorama stores and within 3 years the stores were transformed into 24 Leroy Merlin and 7 Bricocenters.
As of March 2017, Leroy Merlin Italia Srl has 48 points of sale in Italy and a turnover of 1.5 billion euros, with 6,720 collaborators, 99% of whom are also shareholders of the company, and 91% on permanent contracts. The Assago store is the largest in Italy.
Today, Leroy Merlin Italia srl is still the only branch of Leroy Merlin, which was born thanks to the need to enter the Italian market through the incorporation of other existing chains, and not through direct investments in the opening of new points of sale.
Disputes over Leroy Merlin in Russia and Ukraine
After the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, many international companies suspended their operations in Russia.
Leroy Merlin, on the other hand, has not reduced its activities in Russia , where it is present with 143 stores. On March 17, it cut the Ukraine office out of corporate communications, and said it would ramp up supplies to Russia.
In 2020, the company paid $35 million in taxes due to its operation in Russia. The company has therefore been criticized for having contributed, albeit indirectly, to the Russian war effort.
On March 21, 2022, a Leroy Merlin store in Kiev was hit and destroyed by a Russian missile. Unfortunately an employee was involved and lost his life.
This prompted a tweet from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense as a reaction, which we can translate as follows: "
LEROY MERLIN was the first company in the world to finance the bombing of its stores and the killing of its employees".

What are the alternatives to Leroy Merlin?
Alternatively, you can find many of the products also present in smaller digital stores.
For example with Windowo you can find everything about the world of doors and windows.
The differences between Leroy Merlin and our Windowo are several. Here are 3 that immediately catch the eye:
- Windowo specializes in window components. Leroy Merlin is a large but generic hardware store;
- Windowo always directly manages all phases of the sale. Instead Leroy Merlin also delegates to other sellers;
- Windowo relates to its producers and customers. Leroy Merlin is both a shop and an intermediary.
For example, if you buy
handles on Windowo we order from the manufacturer, physically package and ship to wherever you want. We actively monitor every step of the process. In case of problems, we intervene personally and look for the solution.
Instead Leroy Merlin is not only a seller but also an aggregator of other sellers. This is why we can say that Leroy Merlin is more similar to
ManoMano than to Windowo.
