San Bonifacio is a medium-sized town (it has just over 20,000 inhabitants) located in
the province of Verona .
It is a very suggestive Veronese town, ideal for taking a break and enjoying good wine immersed in the beauties of the area.
My name is
Elia Caneppele and I have lived in San Bonifacio VR for over 30 years. What you will read is the result of direct experience.
You can spend a weekend discovering the village and, perhaps, also visit some of the interesting nearby destinations. This is why I thought I'd make
my list of things to see when visiting San Bonifacio for the first time.
San Bonifacio Verona: where it is and useful information
The
municipality of San Bonifacio is located
halfway between Verona and Vicenza (it is part of the latter's diocese), in a strategic position.
The center of San Bonifacio is easily reachable by car thanks to the convenient exit of the A4 motorway (Soave-San Bonifacio exit) and to the regional road 11. In addition, the town is also served by the Milan-Venice railway line.
The actual municipality was born in the 12th century as a rural community, but in these areas there were already ancient outposts since Roman times. The history of the town is very complex, to learn more, I refer you to
Wikipedia San Bonifacio .
It is enough to know that during the Middle Ages, the Modern Age and the Contemporary Age, the place has been the subject of various vicissitudes that have left traces, such as churches and palaces.
San Bonifacio attractions and places to see
Paying a visit to S. Bonifacio di Verona means exploring a series of classic and timeless places, which for centuries have fascinated those who observe them.
1 - The Abbey of Villanova - San Pietro in Villanova
The
Roman abbey of Villanova , dedicated to St. Peter, is certainly the oldest and most interesting historical building in this area. The Villanova abbey was built in the 7th century, in Romanesque style with naves with three apses facing east.
Built in the early Middle Ages, the structure has baroque elements on the outside, such as statues of the Benedictine order.
Inside you can admire frescoes such as those dedicated to the life of San Benedetto or Santa Caterina.
2 - Villa Gritti of San Bonifacio
Villa Gritti is a 15th century building surrounded by a wonderful and immense Italian garden in which imposing centuries-old trees stand out. It is one of the most important villas in the area, so much so as to give its name to the locality in which it is located, Villabella.
Previously built, when it became the property of the Gritti family it was expanded becoming the jewel of the area where it is located.
Today the villa hosts various events such as parties, weddings and cultural events.
3 - Church of Sant'Abbondio alla Motta di San Bonifacio
The
Church of Sant'Abbondio alla Motta , a valuable Romanesque architecture, was built at the end of the 15th century.
The religious building houses paintings and frescoes by anonymous people and in the immediate vicinity it is possible to visit the ruins of the Castle of the Counts of San Bonifacio.
Do not underestimate the possibility of taking a walk among the plants of the nearby
Parco della Rimembranza (which rises on a small hill of volcanic origin) and along the bank of
the Alpone river . In a few steps you leave the town and find yourself along the banks of the stream thanks to a
cycle and pedestrian path . You will be able to enjoy a view that sweeps across the plain and find many glimpses on which to rest your gaze.
4 - Cathedral of San Bonifacio - Santa Maria Maggiore
The
Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore lies on Piazza Costituzione, in the center of the city of San Bonifacio.
Built starting in 1769 and completed in 1806, the Cathedral of Sa Bonifacio was completed with the bell tower built twenty years later.
The architectural style is neoclassical, the facade is divided into two orders and at the top there are three acroterial statues. Worthy of note is the altarpiece of San Rocco attributed to Bonifacio de 'Pitati and preserved inside.
5 - A tour of the center of San Bonifacio
The town is small but fortunately there are many places to visit.
Fortunately, many of the most interesting places are gathered in the center of San Bonifacio, without the need to move too much. From this point of view,
a walking tour is the ideal solution.
If you are hungry, you can go and eat "alla veneta" at the
Osteria da Osei . The restaurant is located in the heart of the town and the traditional dishes of the area are eaten. Definitely to try. I have not found a site to report to you, so I leave you their number to book: 045 761 0790.
Another interesting thing to know is that San Bonifacio is the place where the
Lazzari family brand, specialized in women's clothing, was born.
Did you know that the real gourmet pizza was born in San Bonifacio? The
Pizzeria I Tigli by Simone Padoan is a place renowned for the particular management of the sourdough and the very selected ingredients. It is located near the Parco dei Tigli, from which it takes its name. The last prize won in the long series is the Pizza d'oro 2022, attributed to the four pizza chefs who represent reference values in the dynamic world of Italian pizza.
I also point out
the ancient Fiera di San Marco in San Bonifacio which takes place annually every 25 April. The Fiera di San Marco has almost 150 years of history and its current conformation (market day + Est Veronese Produce) however comes to life in 1984 when some citizens gathered to organize an event that could promote the activities and entrepreneurship of the territory.
Finally, I remind you that in San Bonifacio we are also here at Windowo, the online store of accessories for doors and windows.
The
Windowo warehouse in S. Bonifacio is located near the center, in the Motta area, 3 minutes from the motorway exit.
If you need
